Absolutely true - almost. Calculated this way the actual "interest rate" is 112%. The point, however, is that the cost of money is 12%. The "100% interest" that you are referring to is in fact retained earnings. The exercise is intended to demonstrate in the clearest, most unsubtle way possible the one thing that no one, the poor like the development wonks, believes: it is possible to retain earnings within very, very small businesses. And that demonstrated this little exercise demonstrates to micro-borrowers that they are not as limited as they think, that with financial planning and discipline they can grow their businesses with retained earnings - retained earnings that can easily be as large as the loans they seek.

Hey this was probably one of the most effective articles I have view on the subject so far. I do not understand where you get all your data but keep it coming! I'm gunna send a few folks on over to read this. Amazing, simply fantastic. I'm just getting into writing articles myself, nothing remotely close to your writing skills (lol) but I'd love for you to take my stuff someday! bowfelx series 7 treadmill

Glad to see that you are trying to help poor entrepreneurs. Your interest rate is not 12% if you have a forced savings component. It's probably closer to 1000% if they really have to save an amount equal to the loan size. Check your data with a financial calculator

I really like "Creating the Future": http://hildygottlieb.com/ , though it's more about how to approach all these issues rather than about the specific issues themselves.

Rising Voices is another good one: http://rising.globalvoicesonline.org/

I'll let you know if I think of others :)

GlobeMed at Northeastern University is excited about our opportunity to raise funds for medical supplies, so that the children of Phrao, Thailand will be able to receive treatments for their diagnoses.

We have increased our membership and held two successful fundraisers over the past four weeks and we have a lot of fundraisers planned for the upcoming months. We are also planning to hold educational events on our campus in an effort to increase awareness of Warm Heart's grassroots work and about global health issues.

It has been a great experience for us to play a supportive role since the creation of Warm Heart and we have learned a lot about community-based organizations, as a result.

We are looking forward to the future and the chance to grow as a student-led organization with Warm Heart.
